Passion Ball 2009 ~ Book of Dreams

April 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Hi folks, pb-1004

It’s that time of the year again, full of excitement as FTTH launches Passion Ball 2009. It was hard work for the organisers – ask the ChairLady, Olga and Ain – but it was something to be remembered and cherished for both the attendees and the organisers, for another wonderful and creative night.

henry-christine-laimer

This year, Passion Ball 2009 was held at Capella Singapore, probably the newest hotel in Singapore, on Sat 11 Apr 09. A storm had just passed Singapore and as we descended through the drive into the darkened narrow road leading through lined trees in Sentosa, we saw a grand building welcoming us, all lighted. Was this formerly the barracks? Alas we have to wait for another day to check it out.

A book of dreams, a fairy tale? awaited us. From all these years of PassionBall, we know the hallmark of Olga’s organisation of the Ball, tip top! From a feast to the eyes right to the palate. Despite the gloomy weather – be it nature or the economy – Olga reported that the supporters of Food from the Heart have responded generously in coming again to join in this Passion Ball. Proceeeds from the Passion Ball is one of the important pillars that help sustain FFTH activities. It was a book well written. All the characters were in place and as each chapter unfolded, the scene came into play. Gosh, am I being carried away? (^^)

pb-1119Well, each table now did not go according to table number or chapter number! Beautiful and handsome faces, gorgeous clothings heightened up the evening, complemented with the set up and the animated paintings on the screens on all sides of the oval ballroom. The DJ of the night, Terry Johnson, further enriched the night with his commentaries, his teasing and his drawing out the crowd to gel the night into a big party. The night was set as the crowd welcomed the Guest of Honour, Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, who had graciously agreed to grace the occasion. While we enjoyed each dish placed in front of us, Miles Tranter and the United World College Jazz Band entertained us with great jazz hits.

pb-1056Appreciation of food – sight and taste – complemented with sounds was just almost complete! With the main course being served, it was time for the auction. This year’s auction has a wider spread, a spa stay in South Africa to one in Hua Hin, Thailand and in Bali too; stay in Capella Hotel in Austria and Germany, necklace and Judith Lieber Bag and the most interesting one must be the travel by private jet (BJETS) for 6 persons to Langkawi for a dinner on a private beach and then back. pb-1214

The generous bidding added more for the FFTH’s coffer for the year’s operations. The biggest attraction must be the performance by Evgeny and Sabrina, specially flown in by Lufthansa. Their performance are beyond words, maybe, a few snapshots might give you an idea. (^^) Sarbrina’s handling of the hula loops is just incredible. She made it as if it is a childplay. Evgeny, who has been performing with well known companies such as Cirque du Soleil, made juggling with the soft circular boards whilst standing on a ladder like a simple routine. We know too well the skills required. In between the performance, we had four beautiful models – almost like from the fairy tales – moving in puppetry motions bathed in soft lights that even made my photopraphs look like paintings! dsc_7502

Perhaps, with great food, great company, music and performance, and yes, the champagne and the wonderful red wine, I might have been carried away being too lyrical, but I thought I want to share with you a little of what I saw and telling you that while these people were enjoying themselves, they were also contributing towards FFTH keeping it running smoothly for yet another year. A challenging year for most people!

Passion Ball 2009 has successfully raised a total of $225,000 nett.

To Christine and Henry, Olga, Ain and the FFTH Team, with the volunteers who also worked in this Passion Ball, another great and successful event capped! Not to forget the sponsors who have stuck with us despite challenging times.

Passion Ball 2009 – Book of Dreams

February 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Friends,

We, at Passion Ball invite you to celebrate and become inspired in 2009. This year’s Passion Ball will be based on a daring and imaginative theme: the ‘Book of Dreams’, a concept inspired by Italian auteur Frederico Fellini’s films and fantasies. The 2009 Passion Ball will display this lavish theme by turning the room into a wonderland of surrealism and creativity. To satisfy our collective passions and the cause of the Passion Ball 2009, we implore you to come embrace and create this energy with us.

Come dressed simply in your best, and expect an evening of glamour, indulgence and great entertainment amongst convivial friends.  Dine on the fine cuisine passionately prepared by Capella Singapore’s team of exceptional chefs. Indulge in the night’s extravagant fashion feature, and be amazed by an internationally renowned entertainment act before dancing the night away. Relax over cigars and after dinner drinks alongside a tempting dessert buffet. Indeed, enjoy the finest of passions throughout the evening. The night promises all the magic and delight that you have come to expect from Passion Ball.

Passion Ball 2009 will be held at the brand new Capella Singapore on Saturday, April 11 at 7pm. The significance of this year’s location, the Capella Singapore on Sentosa ensures that the charity gala dinner will be comparable to none. Passion Ball 2009 will be the first premier event to be held at this ultra-luxury hotel.   Capella Singapore offers an inspiring natural setting. Residing on 30 acres of lush rainforest, the hotel’s peaceful setting on a knoll features a masterfully restored colonial building forming a centrepiece to modern architectural elements and sculpture gardens rich with contemporary art working together to charm and inspires all attendees.

All the proceeds to the Passion Ball will go towards a similarly forward-thinking charity: Food from the Heart – a registered non-profit organisation established in 2003 to alleviate hunger and suffering in Singapore.  From its humble beginnings of delivering unsold bread and bakery items to welfare homes, Food from the Heart now runs five programmes all designed to help less fortuned Singaporeans.  In total, Food from the heart reaches out to over 11000 individuals and 160 welfare homes and schools.

So, for the sake of our dream, our inspirations, and a charitable cause close to our hearts, come share a creative and compassionate evening, all the while making a difference in Singapore.  Help us help others in need!

Toys Buffet 2008

December 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Hi folks,
Just came back from another exhilarating experience of watching kids having a ball of a time (to borrow the slogan of Temasek Primary School) and see how the old kids took care of the younger kids, and kids from the donor schools offering toys to the receipient schools. It was like a buyer’s market. (^^) To quite Kahil Gibran, Happiness is in giving, it was in action here!
In the sprawling campus ground of Catholic High, where FFTH used the entire hall and most of the canteens, it was a big feat put together by the people who never say “impossible”! (^^) Imagine, there were events just before the FFTH event when the hall and the canteen were used. There was the O Level exams going on in the morning. Yet within an hour, all the stalls and decorations waiting by the side were put into place! Kudos to the FFTH office team, volunteers and the FFTH Toy Ambassadors! Of course, to the teachers who had to take care of their students, bringing them to the location of this year’s Toy Buffet 2008!
The dance performances by Evergreen School was fantastic! Almost pro! The kids got to “shop” for their toys, watch the performance, have makan (food) at the canteen and voila, games too! The longest queue must be the hair spray booth. The kids just loved to have a tinge of purple on their hair, much to the consternation of some of the teachers, I am sure. Now, even the VIP queued up to have her hair tinted! Another VIP had two hearts on the back of her shoulder nearer to her left arm. Cool ..
It was interesting to see some kids literally carrying their toys to offer to the other kids. And there were also those we went round looking for what might attract them. Ah, it’s like the market, grab before it is too late. I was eyeing at this lonely bear seated on a red chair by the German International School, when one small girl came asking if she could have it. Sure!
 Victor

Collaboration with LEGO

October 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Volunteers & Friends,

We are more than happy to announce that Food from the Heart has managed to strike a wonderful collaboration with LEGO, the giant manufacturer of the popular and well known LEGO toys.

LEGO has pledged to donate LEGO Education sets to all the underprivileged children at 14 of the children homes that are under our beneficiary list and we really appreciate their kind and generous gesture.

On top of that, LEGO has made an irresistible offer that is simply impossible to refuse. Food from the Heart is given this great opportunity to purchase LEGO Education sets at a special discounted price!

For those of you who are keen in contributing to Food from the Heart but are not too sure how to go about doing so, this is a good platform for you to do so!

All you have to do is to issue a cheque made payable to Food from the Heart with your full particulars at the back of it. Please write “Purchase of LEGO toys” as an indication. We would accumulate all the cheques that come in and would use 100% of the donation to make a bulk purchase of the LEGO Education sets.

These LEGO Education sets would then be distributed together with all the used toys collected from 25 donor schools to the underprivileged children at 18 of our self collection centres. We would also be distributing them to the needy students from various neighbourhood schools during our Toys on Wheels that is scheduled to take place from 10-14 November and 15-19 December.

If you happen to have used toys that are still in excellent condition and would like to donate them to us, we would be more than happy to receive them. Please help us to ensure that these toys are clean. You can drop it off at our office located at 161B Goldhill Centre, during office hour throughout Monday – Friday.

Any amount of cash donation will be appreciated. All cash donation made to Food from the Heart is eligible for double tax exemption.

For more details, please contact Ain directly @ ain@foodheart.org / tel: 62597176 (ext 5)

Food from the Heart is looking forward to hearing from all of you with favourable reply.

A Hearty Get-Together!

September 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Last month, a group of 30 “heart”working volunteers gathered at the Grand Hyatt Pete’s Place on a Saturday morning to work their hands on some Italian Recipes!

Upon reaching the restaurant, a warm lingering aroma drew us in as we settled down at a table. The normal bustling restaurant looks spike and span before the start of the business day. A crew quickly showed up and asked,

“Ma’am, Sir would you like coffee tea or juice?”

We were then treated to a lovely breakfast of freshly baked croissants and sultanas! MMmm.. Yum yum.. :P

The entire restaurant has been reserved for the Hearty Italian cooking session conducted by the resident Chef Antonio Massagli.

It was a smashing time of fun and interaction as we stirred, whipped and kneaded the mixture into a good looking

dough! Now we know how the Italians are such creative people that with a plain old dough, they came up with so many variations of pasta shapes and named them Fusilli, Penne, Raviolis and etc…

One of our youngest participant love the dough so much he asked Chef if he could bring it home. And of course how can we turn down endearing requests such as these..?

“Sure.. Bring it home!” :)

After a short break, we did the Tiramisu and Chef shared a few secrets about the different variations and the kind of creme to use. The final step is to overlay the soaked cookies with a concoction of creme. Once that is done, the assistant Chef whipped it away to the fridge.

Chef went on to do a finale live demo of the Sautéed salmon fillet. As the fillet sizzles in his pan, all our stomach churned along in one accord as the wonderful smell awoke every gland and cell to the state of salivation. :P

At the end of the event, volunteers received a personalised recipe booklet with Chef’s autograph in it. Everyone were beaming with joy right to the end of the event.

This session has been specially arranged to thank our volunteers who have serve tirelessly. 3 Cheers to Foodheart volunteers! :)
