Another 30 people turned up at the second workshop at the FFTH office on this afternoon (12Jan08) and were entertained by four photographers, each an expert in his own right.
Kicking off this afternoon’s talk was Eugene Tang, the founder of SingaporeSights. A botanist by profession, he has gone back to his first love, capturing the wonderful moments of life. In this case, like Hermie, he captures a slice of Singapore to show the world. Being involved in what is called the “new media” he shares his art and how he makes a living out of the new media – his website.
Following him was Billy, a fellow volunteer with FFTH. He shows another aspect of commercial photography, which he called it the old media. But he has successfully migrated from the films to the SD cards. He shared the art of commercial photography, be it bottles of wine, an exercising machine, a hard disk or a hotel suite. Now we know better how the pictures look so gorgeous.

Patrick Leong, a chef by profession, took the audience on an underwater journey to the beautiful waters of Indonesia. He shared with the audience the beautiful pictures of the corals, sea anemones, fishes and the art of underwater photography. He even brought along his camera to show the audience, but not his scuba diving gears.
The grand finale was our guru of photography in Singapore. Hailing from France, Gilles Massot stayed in Singapore for more than 25 years and is very passionate about photography. He shared with us the intricate arts and secrets of photography that most of us might not be aware of although we might be using them all the time. “What makes a picture beautiful?” Ah, I learnt its secret today, thanks to Guru Gilles, aka Whampoama. (^^)

It was indeed a wonderful afternoon, but alas too short for much interactions amongst volunteers. But it is the beginning. With the inspirations from the two workshops, we can expect to see more bolder shots in the submissions for the photography competition.

Despite the sudden downpour at Thomson Rd, and other places were already hit by rain, more than 30 Volunteers and their friends turned up at FFTH Office to listen to Hermie, the speaker for the evening. Hermie, who is from Holland, has stayed in Singapore for the past 7 years and has found delight in the everyday things and happenings in Singapore, which most of us Singaporeans seem to miss. Hermie already has a book to her credit, called, “Slice of Singapore”.

Today, Hermie shared with the audience on her experiences and how she captured the moments in the lives of Singaporeans that reveal the essence of the Singaporean way of life. Using examples from her book and her vast archives of pictures from Singapore, Hermie led the audience through the various tips of taking pictures. She encouraged the participants to be observant, always ready to capture that moment that could be gone in a split second.
She got two teams for three participants to consider how to place a simple box and its contents – dominoes – and the angles to capture shots of it. It was a simple but effective hands-on on creativity.

Thanks to Hermie, the members came away inspired and we look forward to their contributions to the Photography Competition.
